General Information / Changes

+
  • Announced at the The 5th KONAMI Arcade Championship finals for DanceDanceRevolution (2014).
  • +
  • First game in the A series. The "A" in the game title is pronounced "Ace", just like the letter A in the deck of playing cards.
  • +
  • The scoring system based originally from SuperNOVA2 has been changed slightly: +
    • GREATs now gives players 60% of score for MARVELOUS minus 10 (previously, 50% minus 10).
    • +
    • GOODs now gives players 20% of score for MARVELOUS minus 10 (previously, 0).
  • +
  • The grading system has also been changed (except AAA and E): +
    • Each letter grade now includes a + and -, aside from D-.
    • +
    • Each letter grade now corresponds to the following ranges: +
      • AA+ : 950,000 ~ 989,990
      • +
      • AA : 900,000 ~ 949,990
      • +
      • AA- : 890,000 ~ 899,990
      • +
      • A+ : 850,000 ~ 889,990
      • +
      • A : 800,000 ~ 849,990
      • +
      • A- : 790,000 ~ 799,990
      • +
      • B+ : 750,000 ~ 789,990
      • +
      • B : 700,000 ~ 749,990
      • +
      • B- : 690,000 ~ 699,990
      • +
      • C+ : 650,000 ~ 689,990
      • +
      • C : 600,000 ~ 649,990
      • +
      • C- : 590,000 ~ 599,990
      • +
      • D+ : 550,000 ~ 589,990
      • +
      • D : 0 ~ 549,990
  • +
  • The clear lamp system from DanceDanceRevolution (2014) returns, with modifications to colors: +
    • gray/transparent: not played.
    • +
    • dark amber: failed.
    • +
    • purple: ASSIST clear (passed the song with ASSIST options enabled, such as CUT1, JUMP OFF or FREEZE ARROW OFF). +
      • If any ASSIST option is used during a song, the assist clear lamp will always take priority.
    • +
    • yellow: clear.
    • +
    • bright red: EXTRA clear (passed the song under LIFE4 gauge conditions),
    • +
    • flashing blue: GOOD full combo clear.
    • +
    • flashing green: GREAT full combo clear.
    • +
    • flashing gold: PERFECT full combo clear.
    • +
    • flashing rainbow/white: MARVELOUS full combo clear.
  • +
  • DanceDanceRevolution (2014) clear lamps transfer over to DanceDanceRevolution A, but scores do not. +
    • Full combo lamps carry over, though they appear as ASSIST clears due to DanceDanceRevolution A's scoring changes.
  • +
  • When using the Screen filter option, if a chart ends with Freeze Arrows, the filter now disappears at the end of the arrows instead of at the start.
  • +
  • Successfully clearing a Shock Arrow now has the O.K. judgement and the combo increase now appear immediately.
  • +
  • Timing windows have been adjusted to remove the "magic BPMs" problem that existed in previous games.
  • +
  • The music select screen now resembles that of the SOUND VOLTEX series. +
    • Sorting by Difficulty now follows other BEMANI games, with each Level folder containing all difficulties rated with said Level.
  • +
  • Song folders now sort songs in the following order: Japanese titles, then regular ABC order, and lastly song beginning with numbers. +
    • Licenses are also no longer put first in the song folders.
    • +
    • Newly revived songs that were not timed-exclusive (Determination and MAKE A JAM!) are listed under DanceDanceRevolution A in Version sort, rather than their respective originating versions.
  • +
  • Options and characters can now be selected via the game's e-amusement website. +
    • Options can now also be accessed by pressing [9] on the keypad while on the song/difficulty selection screen.
    • +
    • The Area Browser can also now be done via the e-amusement website.
  • +
  • For Japanese cabinets with PASELI enabled, this option is now divided with: +
    • PASELI-PREMIUM MODE: the original PASELI option available up to DanceDanceRevolution (2014).
    • +
    • PASELI-STANDARD MODE: uses less points than PREMIUM MODE. This option counts as STANDARD MODE without inserting physical coins.
  • +
  • A total of eight songs released during DanceDanceRevolution (2014) were retrospectively moved to the DanceDanceRevolution A folder. +
    • Included are the four licensed songs from the EDM~Exciting★Dance★Matsuri~ event, the three KONAMI original songs from the OSB~Winter★Special★Present~ event, and きゅん×きゅんばっきゅん☆LOVE.
  • +
  • Even for new songs, characters now use the old dance routines introduced back in DanceDanceRevolution ULTRAMIX instead of the new ones introduced in X. This retroactively applies to every other song as well. +
    • Songs with special choreographies still keep them, though.
    • +
    • Dance Celebration's special choreography was revived as well.
    • +
    • Songs with special choreographies now always force a random male character on Player 1 and a random female character on Player 2.
    • +
    • Character and stage camera and scenery animations now slow down immensely again in response to a stop in a song during gameplay.
  • +
  • The song title and artist are now centered, rather than left-aligned within their box, during gameplay.
  • +
  • AFRO, YUNI, JENNY, and RAGE received new outfits, marking the first time characters receive new outfits since X2. +
    • Character cut-ins were removed, making this the first arcade DanceDanceRevolution game to omit them since their debut in DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA2.
    • +
    • "The Dark One" was removed as a playable character.
  • +
  • The Butterfly SPECIAL ARROW option has been removed.
  • +
  • The 0.75x Speed option has been added.
  • +
  • The HIDDEN and SUDDEN options were removed, making HIDDEN+ and SUDDEN+ usable on all cabinets.
  • +
  • The WAVE option is now affected by speed mods.
  • +
  • The CLUB background dance stage from DanceDanceRevolution X2, which was removed in DanceDanceRevolution X3 VS 2ndMIX, has been restored. This is the dance stage used by returning songs that previously randomized between either the CYBER or BOOM LIGHT dance stages in DanceDanceRevolution (2014).
  • +
  • The BOOM DARK dance stage, along with its five recolored variants introduced in DanceDanceRevolution (2014)'s Replicant D-ignition event, now features rising equalizer bar walls in the background, much like its DanceDanceRevolution X rendition, except that the equalizer bar walls do not flash.
  • +
  • All songs without fullscreen background videos will now always play on one dance stage instead of randomly selecting between multiple stages like in previous games.
  • +
  • All songs received upscaled jackets.
  • +
  • The GROOVE RADAR will now change accordingly when selecting any options that remove steps from the chart.
  • +
  • When the LIFE GAUGE turns from green to red in NORMAL or LIFE4 modifiers, the player's lane now receives a Danger overlay.
  • +
  • On HD cabinets, the lights change colour depending on the current state of the life gauge. +
    • When the life gauge is low, risky or has 1 life left, the lights turn red.
    • +
    • When the life gauge is not low or full, the lights turn blue.
    • +
    • When the life gauge is full or has higher than 1 life remaining, the lights turn rainbow.
  • +
  • EX Score is now always displayed in the results screen. +
    • Due to this, the code to enable display EX Score has been removed, though that the display can still be enabled by the arcade operators during EVENT MODE.
  • +
  • System background music is composed by U1-ASAMi.
  • +
  • The 私立BEMANI学園, jubeat・GITADORA・DDRのTriple Journey, and YuniverHills project (ユニバーヒルズproject) songs are now playable by default.
  • +
  • The Chinese version CHALLENGE variants introduced in X2 are no longer playable; their original Japanese versions are used instead when playing.
  • +
  • First DanceDanceRevolution game to feature full-screen background images with lyrics that remove on-screen dancers for certain licenses.
  • +
  • First arcade DanceDanceRevolution game since 3rdMIX to display lyrics during gameplay, although only for one song.
  • +
  • First arcade DanceDanceRevolution game since 4thMIX PLUS in which the in-game display language can be switched between Japanese and English (for South East Asia only).
  • +
  • First arcade DanceDanceRevolution title officially released in North America and Europe since DanceDanceRevolution X2. +
    • This is the first ever released North American DanceDanceRevolution release to officially support e-amusement.
    • +
    • Unlike other regions, North America does not use the e-amusement Participation system in place since DanceDanceRevolution (2013), allowing the cabinets to be playable without an e-amusement connection at the cost of operators being required to purchase upgrade kits for each version, instead of receiving it as a free download.
    • +
    • European machines do not have e-amusement support due to regulations by the European Union. As with the North American version however, they do not require an e-amusement connection. +
      • Due to this, European machines have a significantly smaller song list than other regions. +
        • European machines also lack a full option menu and access to Extra Stage/Encore Extra Stage due to this.
    • +
    • Last North American/European DanceDanceRevolution game to provide a new marquee.
    • +
    • The North American/European version is the first release in those regions to not translate, transliterate, or romanize song titles or artists, instead leaving them in Japanese.
    • +
    • North American players can choose from: United States (one of the 50 states must be selected), Canada (no individual provinces or territories), or Overseas (for all other countries). +
      • State names are now written in full instead of using abbreviations, while Overseas replaces the Mexico and "etc." options.
      • +
      • These regions were first introduced for high scores in DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA2: the 50 states used an abbreviated form, Canada and Mexico were options, and Overseas was known as "etc."
    • +
    • First European DanceDanceRevolution release without the option to change language to other European languages.
  • +
  • Eight licensed western pop songs were added to coincide with the game's North American release (July 7th, 2016 in Japan; July 6th, 2016 in North America).
  • +
  • First DanceDanceRevolution title to be location tested in Europe since DanceDanceRevolution X2. +
    • The location test used the North American build, housed inside a Japanese X Cabinet.
    • +
    • The location test was the longest of any BEMANI game at the time, lasting three months. This record was beaten by DanceDanceRevolution A20's European location test four years later.
  • +
  • All remaining Dancemania licenses that are not remixes of KONAMI original songs were removed from the series on May 30th, 2016, making DanceDanceRevolution A the first core arcade DanceDanceRevolution title to have no traditional Dancemania licenses in it.
  • +
  • From June 1st, 2017 onward, the level number of the chart being played is shown during gameplay. +
    • This update also blocked CHALLENGE-only charts from being shown when players do not use an e-amusement pass.
    • +
    • On November 30th, 2017, the level numbers were moved to the difficulty frame, while the player ID is now displayed on the space originally for the level numbers, and is used in the evaluation screen as well.
  • +
  • First DanceDanceRevolution title to run on different operating systems, running on Windows XP Embedded or Windows Embedded Standard 7. Later cabinet models ran Embedded Standard 7.
  • +
  • Song labeling on the Music Select screen has changed once again: +
    • white: default. +
      • when unlocked, ENDYMION and ACE FOR ACES are shown in white, even though they are not default songs.
    • +
    • yellow: hidden songs, or songs that only have BEGINNER/BASIC charts unlocked by default.
    • +
    • red: songs only available as EXTRA EXCLUSIVE or FINAL STAGE. +
      • EXTRA EXCLUSIVE LEVEL 1 songs are marked with a gray checkered background.
      • +
      • EXTRA EXCLUSIVE LEVEL 2 and 3 songs are marked with a multicolored checkered background.
    • +
    • green: EXTRA SAVIOR.
    • +
    • purple: songs that need to have difficulty charts locked one at a time, such as the (NEW Generation 流星拡散フェスタ2016, BEMANI SUMMER GREETINGS and DanceDanceRevolution 20th Anniversary songs).
  • +
  • A new category, DDR SELECTION, was added to the game on September 26th, 2018. When playing a song under this category, the interface will change to match that of one of the games released in that period.
  • +
  • DanceDanceRevolution A's original soundtrack is released by EXIT TUNES, making it the first DanceDanceRevolution soundtrack not released by KONAMI themselves since the DDR FESTIVAL & Dance Dance Revolution STR!KE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK album back in 2006. +
    • It's also the first arcade game soundtrack since EXTREME's to contain the majority of its game's licenses on a soundtrack.
    • +
    • It's also the first arcade game soundtrack since X's not released on iTunes.
  • +
  • eAMUSEMENT support for DanceDanceRevolution A ended on February 27th, 2020.
  • +
  • Beginning on May 21st, 2021, European cabinets received an update via USB with the following changes: +
  • +
  • New songs: 155 (Asia), 127 (North America), 67 (Europe)
  • +
  • Total songs: 809 (Asia), 773 (North America), 619 (Europe, 656 songs in Event Mode)

EXTRA STAGE

+

The Result Star system introduced in DanceDanceRevolution X3 vs 2ndMIX has been carried over, and is only available on Premium Play. When 9 Result Stars are obtained, and FINAL STAGE is cleared, EXTRA STAGE will be played. Both players' stars are combined, and progress carries over to the next round if EXTRA STAGE was not reached. Each player can earn a maximum of 3 stars per song. +

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

★★ +For attaining the grade AA-, AA, or AA+. +

+

As of June 13th, 2016, at the end of each round, RINON's HEAT POWER gauge will increase by one bar. At 3 bars, Level 2 is reached, and the player is granted 3 Result Stars at the end of the round. At the maximum of 7 bars, Level 3 is reached, and the player is granted a full set of 9 Result Stars. The HEAT POWER gauge is reset during the e-amusement maintenance window. Amount of remaining time before the HEAT POWER gauge is reset varies from one player to another. Whichever player has the higher HEAT POWER gauge at the time will determine the EXTRA STAGE Level. +

During EXTRA STAGE, the LIFE GAUGE modifier is restricted to LIFE4. +

EXTRA EXCLUSIVE

+

The EXTRA EXCLUSIVE song folder was added on June 13th, 2016. By default, these songs are only playable during FINAL STAGE or EXTRA STAGE with an appropriate level. With each update, a new song was added to EXTRA STAGE Level 2, while songs that were previously assigned to EXTRA STAGE Level 2 were downgraded to Level 1, and from Level 1 to FINAL STAGE (even on Normal Play). The table below shows the dates on when the songs debuted, and the minimum EXTRA STAGE LEVEL required to access the song: +

EXTRA SAVIOR

+

The EXTRA SAVIOR song folder was added on June 13th, 2016. These songs, when unlocked during EXTRA STAGE, can thereafter be played during any stage on Premium Play. +

After playing a song on a specific difficulty level, progress through the chart accumulates. If the summed progress of all of your attempts reaches 100% (or if you clear the song), then that chart, and all difficulties under it, will be unlocked for normal play. For example, clearing a song on DIFFICULT will unlock the DIFFICULT, BASIC, and BEGINNER charts. Also for example, failing a chart 70% in, and then failing it again 40% in, will also unlock the chart. +

Using the modifiers CUT1/CUT2, Jumps OFF, or Freeze OFF will proportionally reduce the amount of progress possible. +

Attempting a chart during EXTRA STAGE Level 3 will automatically unlock the chart even if failed. +

For songs with CHALLENGE charts (such as IX and JOMANDA), you must first unlock the EXPERT chart before you can unlock the CHALLENGE chart. +

NEW Generation 流星拡散フェスタ2016 and BEMANI SUMMER GREETINGS charts must be unlocked one at a time, from BASIC to EXPERT. Charts for Triple Counter and Prey are only available after having unlocked the corresponding charts of the other songs in their respective groups. +

Single and Double charts for a song must be unlocked separately. +

The songs from these past events can be unlocked: +

After unlocking Cosy Catastrophe, 156 steps are required to complete the event. As of August 30th, 2018, this unlocks ENDYMION and ACE FOR ACES for regular play, though the CHALLENGE charts for ACE FOR ACES are only available on EXTRA STAGE LEVEL 1. +

Prior to the April 26th, 2018 update, completing RINON'S ADVENTURE III would enable ENDYMION for EXTRA STAGE LEVEL 3. Selecting it would consume all HEAT POWER, and HEAT POWER was not given at the end of the round. Clearing ENDYMION with at least a AA+ grade would trigger ENCORE EXTRA STAGE, playing ACE FOR ACES at the following difficulty levels: +

+
  • BASIC→BASIC (Added on September 14th, 2017)
  • +
  • DIFFICULT→DIFFICULT (Added on August 9th, 2017)
  • +
  • EXPERT→DIFFICULT
  • +
  • CHALLENGE→EXPERT +
    • CHALLENGE→DIFFICULT (if failed on Versus Play)
+

During ENCORE EXTRA STAGE, any judgment under a Perfect would immediately fail the song. It was not possible to use the left and right buttons on the cabinet to change speed modifiers at the start of ACE FOR ACES, and ASSIST options were also disabled. +

If ENDYMION was cleared on EXPERT, and ACE FOR ACES cleared immediately afterward, then ENDYMION's CHALLENGE chart was enabled. Single and Double charts had to be enabled separately. +

After April 26th, 2018, RINON's progress was doubled, and completing the event enabled ENDYMION as an EXTRA STAGE LEVEL 1 song, along with its CHALLENGE charts. Clearing ENDYMION on any difficulty would enable ACE FOR ACES as an EXTRA STAGE LEVEL 2 song. +

After July 26th, 2018, progress was quadrupled, and completing the event unlocked ENDYMION for normal play, and enabled ACE FOR ACES for EXTRA STAGE LEVEL 1 and its CHALLENGE charts for EXTRA STAGE LEVEL 2. +

After August 30th, 2018, progress was multiplied by 100, and completing the event unlocked ENDYMION and ACE FOR ACES for normal play, and enabled the latter's CHALLENGE charts for EXTRA STAGE LEVEL 1. +

pop'n music Arcade General Information

General Arcade Gameplay

+

pop'n music has a very straightforward menu layout and playing screen. The first screen encountered is of course the credit screen. Insert coins to activate the buttons. On most arcade versions, codes are entered at this point, before pressing the red button to start. On eAMUSEMENT enabled consoles, your card should be inserted now. Navigation through menus is very simple: +

+
  • Red button makes selections and advances menus
  • +
  • White buttons cancel selections when available
  • +
  • Blue buttons scroll left and right or up and down through all menus
  • +
  • Green buttons scroll horizontally through the song select screen
  • +
  • Yellow buttons, when held down, advance a large distance through the song select screen
+

The first menu will be the game mode select screen. Here you can pick between NORMAL MODE, BATTLE MODE, EASY MODE, NAVIGATE MODE, and the like. Before pop'n music Sunny Park, you needed to select the number of buttons you wish to play with, 5 or 9 (instead, in pop'n music Sunny Park you can select your player character now.) This will bring you to the song select screen. Once you've chosen a song, gameplay will start. This is when you would select modifiers and ojamas (also known as normas) to go with your song. After the song, your play will be judged, and you will be returned to the song select screen. After the final song, a rundown of all your songs will be shown, and if you qualify, the name entry screen will be displayed. +

+

Game Modes

+

pop'n music currently consists of two modes: +

+
  • NORMAL MODE +
    • The main pop'n music mode. You can play any of the available songs, using all 9 buttons.
    • +
    • EASY difficulty is available for some songs, which use less than 9 buttons.
    • +
    • Tallies EXTRA POINTS based on song difficulty and ojama modifiers.
    • +
    • EXTRA STAGE can be accessed if a certain amount of points is accumulated.
  • +
  • BATTLE MODE +
    • 3-Buttons mode for two players.
    • +
    • After a certain amount of gameplay, players can launch their attacks by pressing the blue button. The attack puts a modifier on your opponent if successful.
    • +
    • Winner is determined best 2 out of 3 songs.
+

A variety of modes have existed throughout the pop'n music series. Some modes have been removed, renamed, or integrated into other modes.
Former modes include: +

+
  • ENJOY / EASY MODE +
    • Focused for beginners.
    • +
    • A songlist containing a limited number of songs that can be played from, and a simplified difficulty scale.
    • +
    • No modifiers are present in this mode.
    • +
    • No grades. A point system is used instead, starting with 100, and 1 point is deducted per MISS.
    • +
    • Guarantees two out of three songs.
  • +
  • 5 BUTTON MODE (pop'n music 5 to 20 fantasia) +
    • Introduced as 5 LINE in pop'n music 5.
    • +
    • Originally its own mode, but can be played on the same credit as 9-button charts in later games.
    • +
    • Replaced with EASY difficulty in pop'n music Sunny Park.
  • +
  • CHALLENGE MODE (pop'n music 5 to 19 TUNE STREET) +
    • Much like NORMAL MODE, except there's no COOL judgment.
  • +
  • 超CHALLENGE (CHOU-CHALLENGE) MODE +
  • +
  • EXPERT MODE (pop'n music 6 to 17 THE MOVIE) +
  • +
  • NET TAISEN MODE (pop'n music 12 いろは to 19 TUNE STREET) +
    • NET TAISEN has been integrated into NORMAL MODE as of pop'n music 20 fantasia.
  • +
  • LOCAL MODE (pop'n music ラピストリア to éclale)
  • +
  • OSUSUME MODE (pop'n music 9 to pop'n music 11)
  • +

  • +
  • EXCITE MODE (pop'n music to pop'n music 4)
  • +
  • HITASURA MODE (pop'n music 9)
  • +
  • NAVIGATE MODE (pop'n music 20 fantasia)
+

Song Select

+

Throughout the pop'n music series, it has undergone numerous changes of the song select screen. +

From pop'n music éclale, sorting options are placed in a separate menu, which is brought up using either green button. From that menu, songs can be sorted by level, song title, artist name, version, and BEMANI series. From pop'n music うさぎと猫と少年の夢, if sorting by level, levels can be adjusted to a higher or lower level using the yellow buttons. +

From pop'n music Sunny Park to pop'n music ラピストリア, the song select screen is divided in folders on the song wheel, similar to the beatmania IIDX series. Opening folders are done using the red or right green button, and closing folders are done using the left green button. All difficulty levels and ratings are displayed under the banner, and difficulty selection changed to using the yellow buttons to highlight the difficulty. Difficulty selection is still done this way in current versions of pop'n music. +

From pop'n music 10 to pop'n music 20 fantasia, the song select screen looked similar across different versions. In these later versions, songs are scrolled vertically with the blue buttons, and versions or sorts are scrolled horizontally with the green buttons. There is typically a section that sorts all songs by level, and another alphabetically (by genre, of course). Earlier mixes, like pop'n music 8 do not have such luxuries. +To change difficulty, press both yellow buttons simultaneously. This will cycle you up from NORMAL to HYPER, and on to EX if available. In 5 key mode, you will only cycle from 5 to 9 key, then back to 5. +

+

Modifiers

+

To access gameplay options in all versions (except ANIMELO 2 and versions before pop'n 4), press both yellow buttons at the same time during the song loading or Option Select screen. +

As of pop'n music ラピストリア, options are arranged into a menu by category, where navigation is similar to song select. Options are categorized into HI-SPEED, POP-KUN, GAUGE TYPE, and GUIDE SE as basic options. +

+
  • HI-SPEEDs range from x1 up to x10 in increments of 0.1
  • +
  • POP-KUN changes the appearance of the notes, replacing the pop-kun graphic with the face of your character [CHARA-POP(YOU)], the stage's character [CHARA-POP(RIVAL)], or a beatmania IIDX bar (BEAT-POP).
  • +
  • GAUGE TYPE changes the difficulty to build the groove gauge during gameplay. NORMAL, EASY, HARD, or DANGER can be selected. HARD and DANGER are not selectable when the basic options are on.
  • +
  • GUIDE SE during gameplay can be toggled on or off. This is not available in versions before pop'n music うさぎと猫と少年の夢.
+

More advanced option categories can be brought up by pressing 0 on the keypad, which contain RANDOM, JUDGE+, HIDDEN, SUDDEN, and OJAMA 1 and 2. +

+
  • RANDOM contains the options RANDOM, MIRROR, and S-RANDOM. RANDOM randomizes the order of the columns in which the notes, or pop-kuns, drop. MIRROR reverses the order of the columns from right to left. S-RANDOM randomizes the pop-kun into different columns, causing repetitive pop-kun patterns to be entirely random, unlike RANDOM.
  • +
  • JUDGE+, available in pop'n music éclale and later, changes how the judgement and combo are displayed . TIMING adds Fast/Slow above judgements worse than COOL, LOST shows no judgement (except BADs) nor combo, and PANIC displays a false judgement and combo.
  • +
  • HIDDEN and SUDDEN do just what you would expect, either hide the pop-kuns when they get to the bottom of the screen, or make them appear more suddenly by hiding them at the top. HIDDEN and SUDDEN have their own categories to toggle on/off and set the amount of HIDDEN or SUDDEN, similar in function to HIDDEN+/SUDDEN+ on other BEMANI titles.
  • +
  • OJAMA 1 and OJAMA 2 are two separate option categories to set ojamas independently of each other. Either category can be used to set an ojama throughout gameplay or intermittently during gameplay.
+

In versions Sunny Park and earlier, options are divided into four categories: HI-SPEED, RANDOM/MIRROR, HIDDEN/SUDDEN, and pop-kun. Depending on the mode and version, OJAMAs are selectable separately by pressing both white buttons instead of both yellow buttons. +

+
  • HI-SPEEDs range from x1 to x6, but may have 0.5 or 1.0 increments depending on the version.
  • +
  • RANDOM contains MIRROR, RANDOM, and S-RANDOM, the latter of which is unlockable in some versions.
  • +
  • HIDDEN and SUDDEN are selectable, but not adjustable. HIDDEN+SUDDEN makes the notes appear for a short time where the HIDDEN and SUDDEN curtains do not overlap.
  • +
  • The pop-kun modifier changes the appearance of the notes, replacing the pop-kun graphic with the face of your character (CHARA-POP), the stage's character, or a beatmania IIDX bar (BEAT-POP).
+

Scoring and grading

+

As like most rhythm games, players are scored based on their judgement for hitting pop-kuns, with a maximum score of 100,000. There are four judgements: COOL, GREAT, GOOD and BAD, in descending order. The points given for each note is 100,000 divided by the total number of notes rounded to the next number. Getting lower judgements awards less points. The table below displays the percentage of points that can be obtained for a note: +

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
Series/Mode +Judgement +

CHALLENGE/NORMAL
(Sunny Park or earlier)
100%50%10% +
NORMAL
(ラピストリア and later)
70%40% +
+

Beginning in pop'n music うさぎと猫と少年の夢, a clear rank is given to players for achieving certain scores. The scoring was grouped into eight levels: +

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
Rank +Score Range +
S> 98,000 +
AAA95,000 - 97,999 +
AA90,000 - 94,999 +
A82,000 - 89,999 +
B72,000 - 81,999 +
C62,000 - 71,999 +
D50,000 - 61,999 +
E< 49,999 +
+

As an additional requirement, AA grade or higher requires a stage clear. If the player fails the stage but scored more than 90,000, the player will instead be awarded an A grade. +

SOUND VOLTEX Series

+

SOUND VOLTEX is part of the BEMANI series of music games. The game series combines traditional button gameplay with the use of analog dials and sound effects, creating a unique sound and game experience.
+PHQUASE is the current sound director of the series, while dj TAKA is the current sound producer, with DJ YOSHITAKA as the head producer.
+Sota Fujimori is the composer of the BGM for the first four installments, from BOOTH to HEAVENLY HAVEN. PHQUASE composed the VIVID WAVE BGM, and SYUNN composed the EXCEED GEAR BGM. +

What makes SOUND VOLTEX different from the other game series is that regular BEMANI artists (either KONAMI in-house or commissioned ones) are not prominent in the song list. Instead, artists renowned in the doujin and beatmania simulation scene are more common here, plus licensed EXIT TUNES songs and Touhou Project arrangements. There are also remixes of original KONAMI songs.
+While at first the song list mostly consisted of original songs or licenses involving VOCALOIDs, late in the first game's release the artist selection greatly expanded thanks to what it is supposed to be the most important pillar of the series - the FLOOR section. +

SOUND VOLTEX FLOOR refers to the group of competitions posted in its website where Japan-based artists can participate in, with a chance of their songs or remixes appearing in the games. Music contests have their own themes and rules, such as remixing a selection of an artist's songs, or using synthesized vocals. There are also contests related to designing jackets for brand-new songs or to replace pre-existing ones in the game.
+Thanks to the FLOOR contests (and also to the presence of Touhou Project arrangements), the game quickly gained a lot of success, prompting the production team to focus as much as possible on these in the future. Contest winners may also be invited to provide original songs in SOUND VOLTEX itself or in other BEMANI games (most notably, five of the seven beatnation RHYZE members debuted in BEMANI via SOUND VOLTEX FLOOR). +

From April 16th to May 15th, 2015, the first SOUND VOLTEX FLOOR contests (for original songs and appeal cards) exclusive to the rest of Asia were held. However, due to delays in communication between KONAMI, Korean distributor UNIANA and participating artists, the winning contest songs and appeal cards weren't added to the game until over two years later, on February 1st, 2018. (On December 21st, 2016, UNIANA stated on Twitter that it has sent out confirmation emails to all winning artists.) +

As first seen in SOUND VOLTEX II -infinite infection-, new games of the series are released as huge online updates. +

Unlike other BEMANI games, regular soundtracks are not released for the SOUND VOLTEX series. Instead, soundtracks tend to focus on ones from FLOOR contests. Listed below are the soundtracks that have been released so far: +

Other original SOUND VOLTEX songs may occassionally appear in soundtracks for multi-game BEMANI events. +

SOUND VOLTEX is also the first BEMANI game series to have licensed BMS (Be-Music Source) songs. In SOUND VOLTEX IV HEAVENLY HAVEN, it also added songs from major doujin labels such as HARDCORE TANO*C, S2TB Recording, and C.H.S. +

+

Gameplay

+

For simplicity, the games will be referred to by their subtitles (BOOTH, infinite infection, GRAVITY WARS, HEAVENLY HAVEN, VIVID WAVE). +

SOUND VOLTEX's gameplay is similar to other rhythm games like beatmania IIDX and GuitarFreaks & DrumMania. When a note reaches the judgment line in time with the beat, you press the corresponding button or turn the corresponding dial. +

The game interface has 4 CHIP BT note lanes, and 2 LONG FX note lanes that each occupy 2 BT note lanes. BT notes are white and FX notes are yellow/orange. +

In addition to the standard SHORT and LONG buttons, SOUND VOLTEX also has 2 analog dials, one on each side. By default, when a blue trail (left side) and/or a pink trail (right side) appears, you have to turn the respective dial(s) to "follow" the trail(s). These are known as ANALOG CHAINS.
+The effects in the songs are game-related and are caused by LONG FX notes (distortion effects), ANALOG CHAINS (woosh effects), and special CHIP FX notes (added FX effects). +

infinite infection introduced the following gameplay mechanics: +

+
  • SHORT note lanes can now have hold notes, known as LONG BT notes. Conversely, LONG note lanes can now have short notes, known as CHIP FX notes.
  • +
  • The HARD-gauge style EXCESSIVE RATE is added. When the rate drops to 0% at any point, it is a TRACK CRASH.
  • +
  • The INFINITE BLASTER unlock system/folder is added (since HEAVENLY HAVEN known as BLASTER GATE). It unlocks most game-specific special charts (e.g. INFINITE). This folder used to be available once the BLASTER ENERGY gauge is at 100%. Using the EXCESSIVE RATE gauge charges the BLASTER ENERGY gauge by 6.67% a stage (15 plays will fill it).
  • +
  • A course-based mode, SKILL ANALYZER, was added. It functions similarly to beatmania IIDX's Dan / CLASS mode. A gauge exclusive to the mode, PERMISSIVE RATE, was added.
+

GRAVITY WARS added even more mechanics: +

+
  • Any combination of the BT and FX notes is now possible.
  • +
  • ANALOG CHAINS may start from anywhere and go in any direction, and also extend beyond the chart lane.
  • +
  • New charts may include zooming, moving, and even disappearing of the chart lanes.
  • +
  • Colors of the ANALOG CHAINS can now be changed. Two new colors are also available: yellow and green.
  • +
  • Hi-SPEED values can be tuned to an exact BPM value. They can also be stored by pressing 6 on the keypad for easy Hi-SPEED changing.
  • +
  • EARLY/LATE indicators for NEARs can be shown in-game. They have 4 possible positions: LOWER, STANDARD (default), UPPER, and UPPER+.
  • +
  • Timing can be adjusted to be earlier or later by holding START and then pressing 3 or 9 on the keypad, respectively. Values range from -8 to +8. Increase this value if you are getting many EARLYs and decrease it if you are getting LATEs.
  • +
  • The ALTERNATIVE RATE SYSTEM (ARS) has been added to selected modes. This gauge starts with an EXCESSIVE RATE gauge, but when depleted (a TRACK CRASH normally), it will be switched to a EFFECTIVE RATE, at a level as if it were active.
+

HEAVENLY HAVEN introduced the following mechanics: +

+
  • A new default difficulty, MAXIMUM, is added. This difficulty is only present on new songs from HEAVENLY HAVEN onwards.
  • +
  • MIRROR and RANDOM note options are added. MIRROR flips all input horizontally, while RANDOM makes all BT notes appear randomly (and sometimes mirrors FX notes). They cannot be used in SKILL ANALYZER.
  • +
  • Special CHIP FX notes (colored yellow) produce added sound effects when hit. These vary from claps to bass drops.
  • +
  • A new EXTRA STAGE system, named EXTRACK, is introduced. By filling the BLASTER GAUGE to 100% or playing on BLASTER START, the EXTRACK will appear after the FINAL TRACK. The BLASTER GATE folder is now only accessible on EXTRACK or the BLASTER START modes. Ω Dimension, a new EXTRACK-only folder, contains EXTRACK-exclusive charts available to unlock.
+

VIVID WAVE introduced the following mechanics: +

+
  • Speed and judgement offset can now be changed at the song selection menu.
  • +
  • Sorting function has been slightly reworked.
  • +
  • You can now change the colors of the key beams. Available colors are purple, pink, green, and yellow.
  • +
  • The NEMSYS crew characters that appear in the results screen are now animated using Live2D (except for photographed characters).
  • +
  • Timing values are changed from -8/+8 to -16/+16.
  • +
  • As of December 17th, 2019, the BLASTER ENERGY gauge will be filled with EFFECTIVE RATE as well as EXCESSIVE RATE, with 6.67% per song played.
  • +
  • HEXA DIVER, a new EXTRACK-only folder, contains EXTRACK-exclusive charts available to unlock.
  • +
  • As of January 17, 2020, a purchasable item, BLASTER PASS is added, simplifying the gameplay for BLASTER-related unlocks.
+

EXCEED GEAR also introduced more mechanics and changes: +

+
  • A new cabinet, named Valkyrie model, is introduced, which allows access to some exclusive songs and other gameplay mechanics, such as the S-CRITICAL judgement. EX-SCORE is also displayed when S-CRITICAL judgement is enabled.
  • +
  • EXTRACK gauge is added in which the player will have access to EXTRACK if it is filled. They are also separate with BLASTER ENERGY, meaning that the player can access BLASTER-related unlocks outside EXTRACK.
  • +
  • The unlocking mechanics for BLASTER GATE and Ω Dimension were simplified, as players now need to clear or play 20 times (regardless of playing local or online) to unlock the charts. Playing a chart under BLASTER PASS instantly unlocks the chart regardless of results.
  • +
  • The Hi-SPEED value is now displayed in hundredths and its value do not pertain to the BPM. Any BPM changes are also displayed beforehand during a song.
  • +
  • The inclusion of "EFFECT RADAR", a radar representation for a song which evaluates the chart by its six parameters (namely NOTES, PEAK, TSUMAMI, ONE-HAND, HAND-TRIP, and TRICKY).
  • +
  • ARENA START, allowing players to compete each other real-time (Valkyrie model exclusive).
+

To clear a song, your EFFECTIVE RATE must be 70% or higher (for all other gauges, never let the rate drop to zero). This does not affect charts rated Level 7 or below, however, as you will automatically be saved. +

+

Modes

+

Initially, BOOTH only had two modes: ONLINE (single player) and FRIEND (local matching with 1-3 other players). +

infinite infection added SKILL ANALYZER mode, that offers various 3-stage courses, most of which determines a player's Skill Level, and the rest being special commemerative courses. It also split all its modes to credit and PASELI/premium sub-modes when KONAMI further integrated PASELI into all its e-amusement games. +

GRAVITY WARS, upon the launch of its SOUND VOLTEX GENERATOR -REAL MODEL-, added new GENERATOR-exclusive modes. +

HEAVENLY HAVEN merged the SKILL ANALYZER mode into its main modes; now it can be selected while on your first stage. Normal and GENERATOR modes are now split into their individual sections. GENERATOR BLASTER, a GENERATOR-exclusive BLASTER START mode, was added. It also removed the FRIEND modes, as local matching can now be accessed by waiting out a timer after selecting a mode, like jubeat's local matching system. In addition, with the EXTRACK system added on August 10th, 2017, the number of playable stages has increased, and less emphasis is placed on BLASTER GATE. +

VIVID WAVE now has six different modes. These modes are: +

+
  • NORMAL - the standard game mode.
  • +
  • FRIEND - local matching mode.
  • +
  • PARADISE - continuous mix mode.
  • +
  • BLASTER - allows unlocking of BLASTER GATE charts and both Ω Dimension and HEXA DIVER tracks without BLASTER ENERGY.
  • +
  • SKILL ANALYZER - now made as a separate mode for the first time since GRAVITY WARS.
  • +
  • PREMIUM TIME - a time-based session mode similar to beatmania IIDX's PREMIUM FREE. Play as many tracks as you want within a 10-minute window. It is possible to set different challenges, automatically ending or retrying a track if the conditions are broken. You can also end a stage at any time by pressing the FX and START buttons simultaneously or hold them down to instantly restart the track.
+

EXCEED Gear adds two more game modes that are battle-based modes: +

+
  • ARENA BATTLE - a matching mode where two to four players compete in a set of songs, similar to beatmania IIDX's ARENA and pop'n music's Net Taisen mode.
  • +
  • MEGAMIX BATTLE - a two-player matching mode compete in a pool of 10 chosen songs converted into a real-time megamix.
+

SOUND VOLTEX has four main difficulties: NOVICE, ADVANCED, EXHAUST, and MAXIMUM (the latter introduced in HEAVENLY HAVEN). +

Since infinite infection, the new games also have their own "special" difficulty, each named after their subtitles: +

+
  • infinite infection added the INFINITE difficulty, with a light purple hue (previously green with rainbow text).
  • +
  • GRAVITY WARS added GRAVITY, with an orange hue.
  • +
  • HEAVENLY HAVEN added HEAVENLY, with a light blue hue.
  • +
  • VIVID WAVE added VIVID, with a pink hue.
  • +
  • EXCEED GEAR added EXCEED, with a cyan/dark blue hue.
+

These difficulties are equivalent to each other, and these charts are usually added to songs from previous versions, adding the respective games' new gimmicks to otherwise old and outdated songs. +

Difficulty ranges from 1 (the easiest) to 20 (the hardest) since SOUND VOLTEX IV HEAVENLY HAVEN. Previously, it was 1 to 15 in BOOTH, and 1 to 16 in infinite infection and GRAVITY WARS. When playing on LIGHT START, players are restricted to the following levels (first two stages only) based on the highest Skill Level attained in the SKILL ANALYZER: +

In the case of playing ARENA BATTLE, the level restrictions apply based on which class the player has obtained, tied to the VOLFORCE (each class has four tiers, separating minimum VOLFORCE requirements by 0.250 (S to C classes) or 0.500 (D class only)): +

Note that newly added songs (except for most original songs) have the NOVICE and ADVANCED charts always available by default. The other difficulty charts usually must be bought with BLOCKs / PCB. If not, they can be unlocked via BLASTER GATE, or through MISSIONs (in the case of GRAVITY WARS). +

+

Scoring

+

All notes are judged as CRITICAL (perfect), NEAR (good; only for CHIP BT and CHIP FX notes), or ERROR (miss; breaks combo/chain). The maximum score of a TRACK is 10,000,000 (10 million).
+Each note, when hit with CRITICAL timing, is worth (10,000,000 / total chain) points. Each NEAR note is worth half of a CRITICAL note.
+EXCEED GEAR introduced another judgement, S-CRITICAL, which is a judgement stricter than CRITICAL. Its judgment is also worth the same amount of points as CRITICAL in the normal scoring system. This judgement can be enabled or disabled, and is exclusive to Valkyrie model. +

+

Chain

+

Every BT note is counted as 1 combo chain. Every analog right-angle turn or "slam" also counts as 1 combo chain.
+For LONG notes and analog chains, the combo chain starts counting after one beat from the start of the note/chain and ends one beat before. Each LONG note and analog chain counts as 4 combo chain per beat (2 per beat if the song's BPM is more than or equal to 256 at any time). +

+

Grade

+

From BOOTH to GRAVITY WARS, your performance can be rated from D (lowest) to AAA (highest). The grade depended on both score and EFFECTIVE RATE level (or its equivalent level). The calculation of the "grade score" was:
+

+
(TRACK score × 0.9) + (EFFECTIVE RATE level[%] × 1,000,000)

+

The final grade then can be determined from this table: +

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
Grade +"Grade Score" Range +
AAA> 9,800,000 +
AA9,400,000 - 9,799,999 +

C7,000,000 - 7,999,999 +
D< 7,000,000 +
+

From HEAVENLY HAVEN onwards and in GRAVITY WARS コナステ, the grade range is expanded, adding the A+, AA+, AAA+, and S ranks. The rank requirements are also revamped, now basing it on score alone. See the following table: +

Clear medals

+

When playing on an e-amusement account, or on the コナステ version, the game will record your scores and clear status on each song. This will be shown on the song select screen as a medal next to the song's jacket. Which medal will you receive depends on the best result you obtained playing that particular song; and by fulfiling specific play conditions, many songs and charts can be purchased (also called INPUT) in the SDVX Station. +

The table below lists the possible medals obtained for a song (in order of lowest precedence): +

SDVX Station

+

SDVX Station is the section of the game where you can buy in-game items using Blocks or Packets. You gain Blocks and Packets (or PCB since VIVID WAVE) by playing the game. Blocks (Blc) and PCB are used to purchase song charts, while Packets (Pc) are used to purchase Appeal Cards. +

Since NOVICE charts are always unlocked, you will only buy ADVANCED, EXHAUST, and BLASTER (such as INFINITE and GRAVITY) ones. In SOUND VOLTEX BOOTH, you could buy single charts; in the sequel, you can choose to buy only the ADVANCED chart for a song, or all of them (except BLASTER charts) at once. Another difference between the two games is the absence of RANK requirements since SOUND VOLTEX II -infinite infection-. +

Besides purchase costs, often there will be conditions that need to be fulfilled. These can range from clearing a certain number of songs to getting ULTIMATE CHAINS. +

Since HEAVENLY HAVEN, you can buy charts direct from the track select screen. As such, the SDVX Station will only have the Appeal Card generator and POLICY BREAK sections. Due to the implementation of MAXIMUM difficulty for newer songs, many ADVANCED charts that previously required purchase from the Station are now unlocked by default. As the difficulty system was expanded, songs that previously required clears from a certain difficulty level has either been adjusted or removed altogether from the Station. +

As of EXCEED GEAR, many returning songs can now be purchased using PCB without fulfilling prerequisites, including songs that required unlocking from BLASTER GATE and getting number of clears. +

A list of purchasable charts can be found here: +

+ +

Note that when playing new game versions, older charts must still be bought if you haven't done so before. +

+

RANK System

+

IMPORTANT NOTE: The following section is obsolete due to the RANK system being removed in SOUND VOLTEX II -infinite infection-. +

+
SOUND VOLTEX BOOTH Ranks +
+

The purpose of the RANK System in SOUND VOLTEX BOOTH is to limit what song charts players can buy from the SDVX Station. There are 20 ranks in total, and you can raise them by accumulating Rank Points (RP). To accumulate RP you need to play songs and clear songs (getting ULTIMATE CHAINS or PERFECT ULTIMATE CHAINS makes the process faster). Once you gain a new Rank, you need to accumulate a new amount of RP for the next one. +

The RANKS are: +
